Match Report TCG Juniors Vs Thomas McCurtains

Match Report courtesy of Calum Crowley

The Junior team played their first fixture in a month on Sunday afternoon in Greenford against Thomas McCurtains which turned out to be a game of 2 halves.

The Gaels started the game brightly by winning good possession around the midfield and causing the McCurtains problems with their inside movement. It took until the 10th minute for the young guns to register their first point of the match, a lovely point from play from the industrious Kieran Clarke who placed the ball over the bar following a brilliant team move. McCurtains won the resulting kick out and moved the ball well into the forwards and got a score of their own to leave the sides level at 1 point a piece after 15 minutes.

This was to be as close as they got for the rest of the first half as the Gaels pulled away over the remainder of the half. Kieran Cunningham pointed from a free following some more excellent play from the Gaels forwards. Further scores from Rory Jennings, Ryan Kearney, Ryan Elliott and a rare score from the workman like Paddy O'Connor, as well as another from Kieran Clarke had the Gaels on top heading into the break with a score of 7 points to 1.

The break probably came at a bad time for the young guns who started the 2nd half poorly and never managed to fully recover.

3 quick fire points inside the first 5 minutes of the half had the Gaels scrambling for composure which never seemed to come, and when a silly ball was kicked aimlessly into the forward line by the Gaels, the McCurtains managed to break from the back and chalk up the maximum to leave the sides level at 1-4 to 7 points midway through the half. It would take another 5 minutes for the Gaels to register another score from the left peg of Francis McGinley, but the McCurtains fought back to get another score before the killer blow arrived. More sloppy play from the Gaels gifted McCurtains the opportunity to get through on goal and they duly obliged as a man found himself unmarked at the back post to leave 4 points between them with 10 minutes to go. This appeared to be the catalyst that the young guns needed and they sprung into life with a great point from Gerard Geraghty coming in between frees from Ryan Elliott and Mark Woods. That left only 1 point between the teams with the game reaching the death, however the McCurtains won the resulting kickout and moved up the field to win a free right in front of the posts which they stuck over to end the game 2 points in front.

Final score TMC 2-7 TCG 0-11

A tough lesson for the young guns to take, however we look forward to meeting a strong thomas McCurtains side once again when the championship kicks off in a months time. Best on the day for the Gaels were Paddy O'Connor, Jack Elliott and Kieran Clarke.
