London Under 18 League Final 2016
Tir Chonaill Gaels/Round Towers 0-15 Parnells 0-9
Taking off where they left off last October with two cracking games in the minor championship final and replay, the teams again did not disappoint with another exciting game in the 2016 League Final on Thursday. In perfect conditions at Greenford, TCG/RT took first blood with two early points from Brendan Rice and Ronan Joyce and held the upper hand for the first quarter adding further points from the same players with Parnells replying with through Conor Spinks and Matthew McHugh. Parnells came more into the game as the half progressed with Joshua Obahor and Alan Callinan starting to create chances from midfield. Both defences held firm with few clear cut goal chances. Sean and Brendan Rice added a point each for the Gaels before an unanswered five point run from Parnells through Obahor, Spinks(2), McHugh and Andrew Gilroy to give Parnells a one point lead at half time 0-7 to 0-6.
The second half took off with Spinks making a great run at goal and driving a good shot towards the bottom left corner with TCG keeper Conal Vaughan making a brilliant diving save to push the ball clear. From the break the Gaels worked a nice move from the back with quick accurate passing through Ryan McCready, Daniel O’Connell, Sean Rice and John Creaton to set Ronan Joyce up for his third point to level the game. At this point the young Gaels now with the slight breeze stepped up a gear and hit further scores through Daniel Nugent, John Creaton and Joyce to open a small gap. Conor Redmond was marshalling his defence well from full back while Conor McCarthy was leading from midfield, working end to end. Another nice passing move saw John Creaton put Sean Rice in on goal, this time Parnell’s keeper Frazer Beccles pulled off a great save pushing the shot onto the crossbar to keep his team in the game. Dylan Moore-Jaunaii fielded a kickout on the left wing and cut a great line across the D picking off a lovely point on the run. This was followed by John Creaton picking up his second point. Brendan Rice added two frees before Parnells responded with points from Gilroy and Spinks to narrow the gap to five points. Entering the final minutes, Parnell never giving up, went hell for leather for goal but the Gaels defence was solid but eventually conceded a penalty with time almost up. Once more Spinks hit low to his left and Vaughan again pulled off a great save and the Gaels again broke quickly from the back. Parnells conceded one last free which was converted by Brendan Rice to give the Gaels a six point victory 0-15 to 0-9. Credit must be given to both teams for the quality of play and the intensity level of a very enjoyable game watched by a great crowd of parents and supporters. Impressive for TCG/RT were Conor Redmond, Ryan McCready, Conal Vaughan, Brendan Rice, Conor McCarthy and Ronan Joyce while Joshua Obahor, Frazer Beccles, Alan Callinan, Conor Spinks and Andrew Gilroy shone for Parnells.
