Tir Chonaill Gaels Club Notes - 8 August 2016
Tir Chonaill Gaels defence of the London Senior Championship begins this weekend at Greenford when we face the Round Towers (Sunday,14th 4.30pm) and we wish Lloyd and all the boys all the best in this year’s campaign. It will be the second meeting of the two teams in just over a week as the Gaels ran out 0-15 to 1-09 winners against the Towers at Mitcham last weekend to reach the league final and the chance to make it three league titles in a row.
The Gaels started brightly with John McGrath and Adrian Hanlon hitting points before the Towers scored a goal to upset the plans. Each team exchanged scores with the Gaels going in at half-time a point up. Playing against a slight breeze in the 2nd half, each team matched each other score for score until the Gaels pulled away in the final 10 minutes to get three points ahead and the Towers were unable to claw themselves back into the game. Stuart Johnson, Anthony McDermott and Eoin Mageean put in battling performances while Adrian Hanlon & John McGrath kept the Towers at bay with some great score taking.
Final Score Tir Chonaill Gaels 0-15 to 1-09.
The Juniors had another busy week but unfortunately coming out on the wrong end of defeats against St. Kiernan’s in the Homegrown competition(1-11 to 2-06) mid-week and lost out to the Tara’s by the narrowest of margins in the Championship at Greenford at the weekend (2-07 to 2-06).
Against a strong wind in the first half the young lads battled hard and went in 1 point up at half time on a score line of 0-5 to 0-04. A good start to the 2nd half saw Ryan Elliott bag a brace which opened up a lead but the Tara's wouldn't back down and 2 goals of their own left it level heading into the final minutes. Tara's managed to pinch the final score and come out on top 2-07 to 2-06.
As all season, a massive effort was given by the players and management in both games and good luck to all the team for the rest of the season. Next game is against Naomh Padraig at Greenford at 1pm on Sunday 14th of August in the league.
Congratulations to former player Joe Feeney on his recent marriage. We wish him and his wife happiness and good health for their future together.
Good luck to Lloyd, Patrick and their band of merry men as they head for Dublin this week to take part in the GAA World Games. We hope all the boys have a successful trip back to the old country and have a great tournament.
