After all the hype and build up over the past two months, we made the journey to Westmeath last weekend to play Maryland in a Xmas special of celebrity bainisteoir.
A large party travelled over for the game along with plenty of ex players and members who made their way from different parts of Ireland.
A great show was laid on by RTE and the Maryland club with the Garda Band entertaining the large crowd, commentary came from the voice of Gaa Michael O'Muircheartaigh while Marty Whelan went head to head with our own Patrick Kielty.
Conditions were far from being ideal with heavy rain all day on Friday but both teams put up a good show as it was nip and tuck for most of the game.
With Maryland having home advantage they took the game to the Gaels in the first half with all their scores coming from frees but Kevin Downes and Dan Mc Cusker kept us in touch to leave the score 0-4 each at half time.
Maryland started the second half the better team with two points early in the half to open up a lead which prompted Patrick Keilty and his backroom team to make some changes to get us back into it, step up Dan Mc Cusker who received a ball over the top of the Maryland defence and rounded the keeper and hammered the ball to the net to the joy of the large TCG support.
Both teams exchanged scores in the final ten minutes but Maryland could not close the two point gap with us holding onto procession well and deservingly winning. 1-6 to 0-7.
In all it was a great weekend for the club, to go over to Ireland to win the match on Maryland’s own patch in such bad conditions, to meet so many old faces from years gone by and to raise the profile of our club and football in the UK in general.
The club would like to thank the Maryland club for the warm reception we received and the hospitality we got all weekend and to the Grand Hotel and Brownes Bar who entertained us.
Photographs of the weekend’s events can be seen on our website later on in the week.
The program will be screened on RTE1 on the 28th December at 6.30pm
