McCloskey commits to Leitrim
23 January 2009
New Leitrim manager Mickey Moran has received a significant boost with the news that Gary McCloskey has committed himself to the cause for 2009.
It finally ends speculation that the midfielder was about to throw in his lot with London, where he is currently working.
"As far as I’m concerned, Gary is part of our squad," Moran said.
"We have been in regular contact with him and he did keep in touch with the lads. He called into training over Christmas. From talking with the players, the one thing that keeps popping up is that Gary is very well respected."
Moran, whose side face Sligo in their re-fixed FBD League game in Tourlestrane tonight, expects McCloskey to be available for the first round of the National League on February 1.
"Gary is training fairly well. Tir Chonaill Gaels are a very professional outfit and his conditioning and training should be okay.
"He played in the All-Ireland club quarter-final last weekend so he is in fairly good condition. It will be a matter of giving him a rundown of what we’re about and what we’re looking for but I’m sure that Gary will pick it up fairly quickly."
