International Seven-a-Side Tournament London
Tir Chonaill Gaels, London’s biggest and most successful Gaelic football club invites entries for their annual international seven-a-side football tournament on Easter Saturday, 11th April, 2009.
Now in its eighth year this popular event attracts entries and followers from all over Ireland and Britain. Last years event was won by Galway side Michael Breathnach who defeated Glenswilly from Donegal. The winners received £1000 in O’Neills Vouchers and the Francie O’Donnell cup.
Previous winners in the tournament include St Killians Whitecross from Armagh, Queen’s University Belfast, Killybegs, Donegal and Salthill Knocknacarra, Galway.
This year we welcome back for the seventh time the All Saints club from Ballymena.
The Tir Chonaill Gaels Football Club was formed in 1962 by a group of Donegal men in Kilburn to facilitate the rising Donegal community in London. Since then the Club has come a long way. They have won twelve London and British Senior Championships in its short history and also competed in twelve All Ireland Club Championship Quarter Finals against many of Ireland’s top sides. These include Lavey (twice), Crossmaglen rangers (twice), Burren, Nemo Rangers, Balinderry, Knockmore, Castlebar Mitchells, Castlehaven, Salthill Knocknacarra and most recently went down to Galway and Connaught champions Corofin at Ruislip in January.
Over the past two decades the club has dominated the London championship winning a total of eleven titles with players from every county in Ireland having played for them.
The Gaels are one of only two football Clubs in London with teams participating at all youth and adult levels. 2008 was a memorable year for the Club on the field of play with London success with the Under 16 team winning the treble for the third year in succession. The Reserve team won the Championship for the fifth time in six years and the seniors won the Championship for the third time in four years.
To finish the year off the club had the pleasure to take part in the highly acclaimed programme Celebrity Bainesteoir Christmas special on RTE television. Comedian and TV personality Patrick Kielty managed the Gaels to victory over Maryland from Westmeath managed by RTE’s Marty Whelan.
The Club extend an open invitation to any club in Ireland to come across for the 2009 Tournament, or indeed visit them at any time for a challenge match. Also on the day there will be a ladies 7 aside tournament which teams from England and Ireland are invited to play in. Tir Chonaill Gaels can help with the organisation of travel and accommodation etc.
