Paddy Carr's Kilmacud see off TCG conquers Corofin
All-Ireland club SFC: Kilmacud see off Corofin
21 February 2009
Kilmacud Crokes 2-12
Kilmacud Crokes will play Crossmaglen Rangers in the AIB All-Ireland club SFC final after Mark Vaughan inspired the Dublin champions to a hard fought win over Corofin
The two sides played out a compelling contest at Cusack Park Mullingar with the margin of defeat harsh on the Connacht men, as they levelled the game twice in the second half and were only really out done when Vaughan scored the defining goal two minutes from time.
Crokes led by Pat Burke’s 11th minute goal at the break, 1-5 to 0-5, with Vaughan accounting for three of those points from placed balls. Corofin looked to be in real trouble as they lost their inspirational full back Kieran Fitzgerald to a shoulder injury and were set to play against the breeze in the second period.
Crokes extended the advantage on the restart but Corofin battled gamely and with little over ten minutes remaining had levelled the game with a flurry of classy points.
The game was on a knife edge and extra time seemed a real possibility but out of nowhere Croke ignited with a burst of 1-4, the goal from Vaughan and points from the same player (2), Brian Kavanagh and Burke again.
It was cruel luck on the Galway men but Crokes have made a habit of bagging late crucial scores all the way through their run to this stage and they will hope their good fortune will continue against competition master Crossmaglen Rangers on March 17
