Club Notes - 22nd October 2007
Andy Duffy Memorial Weekend.
The club had a very enjoyable weekend past in the Carrigart/Downings area of Donegal for the first anniversary of our late chairman Andy Duffy. Arriving in Donegal as County champions was a tremendous tribute to Andy for the occasion with a unbelievable turnout from former Gaels members.
Mass was celebrated in Carrigart church by Fr Charlie Byrne and Fr Pat Mc Garvey with a match played afterwards against the Downings club who had a few former Gaels players making an appearance.
It was great to see so many old faces with people like Jackie Green, one of the founder members, Mick McGarth and Seamus Mohan former Chairmen, Seamus Murphy and Rosemary McGarvey, former Secretaries.
Terrence Gallagher, Owen and Maria Bonner, Tommy McFadden, Cormac McGarvey, Brendan McCreadie, Tony Blake, John Cunningham and Paddy Tinnelly.
And of the most recent players to leave the club there was former Manager Andy Carr, former Captain Paddy McConighley, JP Breslin, Declan Alcorn, Fergal Hoban, Daniel Elliot and Eamon Sweeney to name a few.
The game was played at the Downings pitch and was very competitive throughout with the Gaels sticking their necks out to win by a point with a score of 0-11 to 0-10.
The cup was presented by the O’Conner family of the Downings Bay Hotel to captain Hughie Cunningham.
The club would like to thank everyone who made this such an enjoyable and memorable weekend and to all the club members who made the journey over.
The only complaint over the weekend was from Andy Gallagher who was not happy with the accommodation and the breakfast for the money he had to pay!!
This weekend the senior team play in the Conway Cup against Saint Brendans on Saturday at Ruislip with a 4-30pm throw-in.
On Sunday the Reserve team go out to defend the Championship with the final against Fulham Irish at Ruislip with a 3pm throw-in.
Well done to senior player Fergus McMahon on winning the London Senior Hurling Championship final last weekend with the Robert Emmett’s and adding it to the Football Championship. Not a bad eight days work!
Get well soon.
All at the club give their best wishes to member Mary Toland who is out of hospital after a spell inside. Husband John will be looking after Mary now after going to Donegal last weekend to bring back some fresh sea air !
